Apple Music Will Require and Display Made With AI Labels

Apple will apply visible Made With AI labels to songs materially generated using AI on Apple Music, making required Transparency Tags mandatory for material AI use. The change addresses the fact that more than a third of monthly uploads are 100% AI-generated while such tracks represent less than 0.5% of listening.

Apple will require Made With AI labels on tracks where AI generates a material portion of the content. These labels will display visibly to all Apple Music subscribers later this year. Creators must apply AI Transparency Tags for such tracks. Over one-third of monthly uploads are fully AI-generated. The change increases transparency as AI content rises on the platform.

Apple has notified its music industry partners that it plans to introduce a Made With AI label for content it determines is materially generated using AI (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Apple requires AI Transparency Tags for material AI use. The emails outline the upcoming requirement that any track meeting the criteria will carry a visible label for all Apple Music subscribers.

According to the message, creators must now apply AI Transparency Tags whenever AI contributes a material portion of a song. This covers fully AI platform-generated tracks, which Apple defines as those primarily derived from a generative AI service.

Transparency Tags were introduced as an optional system in March. The company first revealed the tagging framework in March, allowing disclosure of AI involvement across artwork, tracks, lyrics, composition, and music videos.

At launch the tags were voluntary, with Apple leaving it to content providers to decide what counts as AI-generated material.

More than a third of uploads are 100% AI-generated. During an April interview with Billboard, Apple Music vice president Oliver Schusser reported that over one-third of monthly uploads to the service consist entirely of AI-generated material, yet such tracks make up less than 0.5 percent of total listening time.

Schusser noted that while Apple operates an internal detection tool, the company continues to depend on disclosures from creators themselves.
