OpenAI Launches GPT-6.1 Terra at $1/$5 Per Million Tokens, Half Sol's Price

OpenAI on Monday released GPT-6.1 Terra, a model it describes as "a fast, efficient model that combines detailed visual reasoning and precise computer use alongside clearer, more natural writing." OpenAI calls it a significant step up from GPT-5.6 Terra, and says GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra remain the better choice for the most complex coding tasks.

Standard API pricing is $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, according to OpenAI. Its pricing page lists GPT-6.1 Sol at $2 and $10 and GPT-5.6 Terra at $2 and $12, so Terra's input and output rates are 50% below Sol's, and its output rate is about 58% below GPT-5.6 Terra's.

On Agents' Last Exam, a computer-use benchmark OpenAI ran itself, the company says Terra at medium reasoning effort scores 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra at about one-third the cost, and performs on par with GPT-6 Astra at one-tenth the price per token while finishing tasks over three times faster. OpenAI also reports 50.3% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 at max effort, against 21.5% for GPT-5.6 Terra.

It is available now to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, and in the API as gpt-6.1-terra, which OpenAI's docs list with a 1.05 million-token context window.

OpenAI's system card addendum treats the model as Critical for cybersecurity and High for biological and chemical capability under its Preparedness Framework, using the same safeguards as Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. Independent benchmarks have not been published yet; early coverage from outlets such as The Verge relays OpenAI's claims.
