Tesla Model Y First to Pass NHTSA's New ADAS Safety Tests

The 2026 Tesla Model Y became the first vehicle to pass NHTSA's new ADAS tests in four categories including pedestrian emergency braking and blind spot intervention. The result adds to the model's existing 5-star rating and comes amid separate ongoing NHTSA reviews of Tesla's Full Self-Driving software.

Tesla Model Y First to Pass NHTSA's New ADAS Safety Tests

The 2026 Tesla Model Y passes NHTSA's new ADAS safety tests first, clearing all four categories: pedestrian automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assistance, blind spot warning, and intervention. Vehicles built on or after November 12, 2025, qualify. This result demonstrates the lifesaving potential of driver assistance technologies and sets a high bar for other manufacturers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced that the 2026 Tesla Model Y is the first vehicle to pass its new advanced driver assistance system tests. Vehicles built on or after November 12, 2025, met the criteria in all four categories evaluated.

The tests, added to the agency's New Car Assessment Program, assess real-world accident prevention rather than post-crash performance. The Model Y cleared pedestrian automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assistance, blind spot warning, and blind spot intervention. These features come standard on the 2026 model.

NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison highlighted the achievement in a statement. “Today’s announcement marks a significant step forward in our efforts to provide consumers with the most comprehensive safety ratings ever,” Morrison stated. “By successfully passing these new tests, the 2026 Tesla Model Y demonstrates the lifesaving potential of driver assistance technologies and sets a high bar for the industry. We hope to see many more manufacturers develop vehicles that can meet these requirements.”

The Model Y already holds a 5-star overall safety rating from NHTSA. The new result follows the agency's closure of an investigation into steering issues on older Model Y vehicles.

Tesla's relationship with the regulator continues on other fronts. NHTSA closed an inquiry into Actually Smart Summon last month while maintaining an ongoing review of the low-vision performance of the company's Full Self-Driving software.

The passing of these specific tests underscores the strength of the Model Y's core driver-assist systems even as development of more advanced autonomous features proceeds. The vehicle is positioned as a benchmark for other manufacturers seeking to satisfy the updated standards.

Waymo to Repurpose Robotaxi Batteries for Grid Storage

Waymo and B2U Storage Solutions announced a strategic supply agreement to repurpose used batteries from the robotaxi fleet for stationary energy storage on power grids. The deal could add hundreds of megawatt-hours of capacity to projects in California and Texas while extending battery usefulness in the same regions where the vehicles operate and charge.

Toyota Abandons Lexus LF-ZC Electric Sedan for 2026

Toyota has abandoned its planned Lexus LF-ZC electric sedan that was due by the end of 2026. The company will instead focus on larger SUVs while continuing solid-state battery and gigacasting development for future EVs.

Rivian Confirms June 9 Launch for R2 with Orders, Demos and Deliveries

Rivian confirms the R2 launches on June 9 with order invitations, demo drives at its Spaces and initial customer deliveries all beginning that day. The concurrent approach seeks to avoid criticism from the R1 rollout as the company shifts toward mass-market EVs.
