Apple on Oct. 28 introduced the all-new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, a redesign that brings a tandem OLED screen, Touch and the Dynamic Island to the Mac for the first time. It comes in 14- and 16-inch models with M5 Pro or M5 Max chips. Preorders open today, and the laptops start arriving Friday, Nov. 6.

The display. Apple says PROLED XDR uses tandem OLED technology with two self-illuminating pixel layers. It lists up to 2000 nits of peak HDR and SDR brightness, a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, a 120Hz variable refresh rate and a color gamut covering both P3 and Adobe RGB. A nano-texture option is etched into the cover glass. The screens measure 14.2 and 16.3 inches.

Touch and Dynamic Island. Apple says the touch sensor is built into the display panel rather than layered on top, and a redesigned hinge keeps the screen steadier when touched. The Dynamic Island becomes the home for Spotlight, Live Activities and Siri AI. “The new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display is a monumental step forward for the Mac,” said Johny Srouji, Apple’s chief hardware officer.

Context. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported on Oct. 27 that Apple had discussed charging $2,899 for the 14-inch model with an M5 Pro chip and at least $3,399 for the 16-inch. Apple’s U.S. starting prices match those figures. This is separate from the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 that Apple announced on Oct. 27 from $1,999. Source: Apple Newsroom.
