Binance is investigating a suspected hack after billions of dollars moved out of wallets labeled as its hot wallets. Estimates cited by CoinDesk, Decrypt and The Block range from about $5.5 billion to $5.8 billion; if confirmed, it would be the largest crypto hack on record. Binance said user funds are completely safe, and Tether said it froze more than $1.567 billion in USDT.

Binance said Thursday that it is investigating a potential security issue after large outflows from wallets labeled as its hot wallets, in what on-chain analysts and several crypto outlets describe as a suspected hack.

The exchange later said in a post on X that user funds are completely safe. Binance has not publicly detailed the cause of the outflows.

Size of the suspected breach

Estimates vary. CoinDesk reported that the receiving wallet held more than $5.7 billion in crypto, citing Arkham Intelligence. Decrypt cited an on-chain tally of at least $5.57 billion across Ethereum, Bitcoin and Tron, and The Block reported that Coinbase's Conor Grogan put the figure at up to $5.8 billion.

If confirmed, the incident would surpass the roughly $1.5 billion Bybit hack in February 2025, previously the largest on record, Decrypt reported.

Stablecoin freezes

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said on X that the company froze more than $1.567 billion in USDT. Circle froze about $823 million in USDC held in the main receiving wallet, according to on-chain data cited by Decrypt and Unchained.

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, who no longer runs the exchange, wrote on X that it "does look like a hack" and that he expects user funds to be fully covered.

Separately, lending protocol Aave froze its markets on Avalanche after the suspected hacker borrowed about 20,000 wrapped ETH (about $44 million) against stolen USDT, CoinDesk reported.
