ECB President Christine Lagarde will step down on Feb. 7, 2027, the ECB said Thursday, about nine months before her eight-year, non-renewable term was due to end. European Council President António Costa said the process to appoint her successor under Article 283(2) of the EU treaty begins immediately. No successor has been named.

Lagarde is leaving early. "European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde today informed the Governing Council and the President of the European Council António Costa that she will step down from her position on 7 February 2027," the ECB said in a release Thursday. The ECB did not give a reason, and no successor has been named.

Her term had about nine months left. Lagarde has led the ECB since November 2019. Members of the ECB Executive Board, including the president, serve a single eight-year term that cannot be renewed, so her mandate was due to run until October 2027.

The search for a successor starts now. Costa said the process to appoint her successor "will be initiated today and will proceed without delay," with a view to a timely decision. Under Article 283(2) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, the European Council, acting in its euro area composition, appoints the ECB president on a recommendation from the Council, after consulting the European Parliament and the ECB Governing Council.

Timing. The announcement came ahead of the ECB's interest rate decision due later Thursday, CNBC reported.
