Bungie Ends Active Development on Destiny 2

Bungie ends active development on Destiny 2 as of June 9 after almost a decade of updates and expansions. The game remains available to play but receives no further content. The studio shifts to new titles following a drop in players and challenges after Sony bought it for billions.

Bungie has announced it will end active development on Destiny 2 as of June 9 after nearly a decade of support. The studio launched the game in 2017. It has experienced highs and lows, released multiple expansions, and shifted to free-to-play.

The title became a PlayStation 5 first-party game after Sony acquired Bungie for $3.6 billion in 2022. That deal made the developer central to Sony’s live-service plans. Bungie is now moving away from the game that defined much of its recent work.
Destiny 2 will remain online and available to play for the foreseeable future despite the end of active development.

Destiny 2 will remain online and playable for the foreseeable future. No further content updates or live-service support will arrive. Bungie states its final update will prepare the game as an inviting space for returning players.

The Washington-based studio will now focus on new beginnings and incubating its next projects. It is unclear whether this includes Destiny 3 or something entirely new. The decision marks a major shift for the developer.
That title has struggled to attract a particularly large playerbase despite positive reviews.

The Final Shape expansion in 2024 wrapped up Destiny 2’s storyline. Last year’s Star Wars-themed Renegades expansion followed. Player numbers have dropped sharply since then.

Bungie has turned to Marathon in the meantime. That game has struggled to build a large audience despite positive reviews. The challenges have affected the studio’s position under Sony, which acquired Bungie to lead its live-service push and has since written off over $750 million of the studio’s value.
