Bloomberg: Some iPhone Duo Owners Report Inner Screens Cracking Early

Bloomberg reports a growing number of iPhone Duo owners say the inner folding display cracked along the crease within hours or days of buying it. It confirmed the problem with more than half a dozen customers, who described a crunch or a bump under the screen near the hinge. Apple hasn't commented publicly. Employees told Bloomberg a team is investigating and engineers are collecting affected phones, and the share of units affected is unknown.

Bloomberg reports a growing number of iPhone Duo owners say the inner screen cracked along the crease within hours or days, and it confirmed this with more than half a dozen customers. It appears to affect a minority of units. Apple hasn't commented publicly, employees say a team is investigating, and the cause and share affected are unknown.

Bloomberg reports a growing number of iPhone Duo owners say the inner folding display cracked along the crease within hours or days of buying it. Mark Gurman wrote that Bloomberg confirmed the problem with more than half a dozen customers. Apple has not given a cause, and the share of units affected is unknown.

What owners describe. The first reports surfaced on Reddit and other social media over launch weekend. The iPhone Duo went on sale Oct 23, starting at $1,999. Owners described a crack along the center crease, and some also saw white patches or lines on the inner screen. They described hearing a crunch while unfolding the phone and feeling a bump under the display near the hinge. The smaller outer screen reportedly keeps working.

Not every unit is affected. The issue appears to affect a minority of units. Bloomberg's own review unit and a second Duo it bought did not show the problem. Gurman said on X that the issue is real and that several people sent him images and stories of their new device breaking within hours.

Apple's response. Apple hasn't commented publicly and hasn't given retail stores or customer service guidance yet. Employees told Bloomberg a team is looking into the issue, and engineers are trying to get affected phones for analysis.

Other coverage so far. MacRumors reported similar photos on Oct 23, and cautioned that the backstory behind many images is unknown and some may be user damage. On Oct 25, The Verge reported that a YouTuber reproduced a crack in durability testing and found a thin hinge link had snapped, which is a hypothesis rather than a confirmed cause. Ars Technica reported on Oct 26 that Apple hasn't acknowledged the issue and that the scale is unknown. An iFixit teardown did not definitively establish what is causing the failures.
