Xbox CEO Asha Sharma plans to release a next-generation handheld by the 2027 holiday season and the next Xbox console by the holidays in 2028, according to people familiar with the strategy, per a Fortune profile of the executive. Microsoft has not confirmed the timeline. Kotaku, which also reported on the profile, said the handheld could be a successor to the Asus-made Xbox Ally X.
Xbox wants gaming-optimized software for the handheld.
Project Helix is the next-generation hardware effort. Fortune describes Project Helix as Xbox's next-generation hardware. It is unclear whether Helix covers both the handheld and the console. Fortune reports the Helix console has internally been projected to cost consumers between $1,200 and $1,800 unless Microsoft subsidizes it.

Xbox and Windows teams clashed over the operating system. Windows leaders wanted the upcoming handheld to use a trimmed-down version of Windows Home. Sharma's team has sought to build and control its own software for gaming performance. A senior Xbox executive threatened to scrap the handheld project rather than adopt the Windows build, according to people briefed on the clash, Fortune reports.

Xbox now largely directs the OS for the project. Sharma said the two teams still collaborate closely: "We can't build Helix on our own." Some people familiar with the matter told Fortune that Helix engineering deadlines have been moved up by at least several months.
