CoinDesk: JPMorgan has made its JPM Coin deposit token available to institutional clients on Ethereum, the bank said, after deploying it on Ethereum mainnet on Monday. The move expands the token beyond Base, the Coinbase-built layer-2 network where it launched, and beyond the bank's private Kinexys network, which already processes over $7 billion daily. JPMorgan said Ethereum was chosen for its liquidity and existing institutional use. The bank aims to serve crypto firms and financial institutions settling trades or backing tokenized assets.

Headline corrected. An earlier headline said JPMorgan brings JPM Coin "to Ethereum," implying a move. The token is deployed on Ethereum mainnet in addition to Base, where it launched. Headline now reads: JPMorgan expands JPM Coin to Ethereum mainnet beyond Base.

An earlier version of the TL;DR said JPMorgan "will move" JPM Coin from Base to Ethereum and that no launch timeline was given. JPMorgan said the token was already deployed on Ethereum mainnet on Monday, Oct. 19, and is available to institutional clients; it expands beyond Base rather than moving off it. The TL;DR now matches the article and CoinDesk's report.

JPMorgan has made JPM Coin, a token representing dollar deposits at the bank, available to institutional clients on Ethereum, the bank said in an emailed statement reported by CoinDesk. The token was deployed on Ethereum mainnet on Monday. Bloomberg first reported the news.

JPM Coin expands beyond Base. The token launched first on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network built by Coinbase. In January, JPMorgan said it planned to take the token to the Canton Network.
Almost $50 billion in crypto assets are locked in Ethereum-based applications, according to DeFiLlama.

Ethereum chosen for liquidity. Emma Landriault, head of Kinexys Labs at JPMorgan's blockchain division Kinexys, told Bloomberg that Ethereum offers more liquidity than rival networks and is already used by institutional clients. The bank aims to serve crypto firms seeking blockchain payments and financial firms that need a token to settle trades or back tokenized assets.

"Issuing JPM Coin first on Base and now on Ethereum is a meaningful step towards providing our institutional clients with multi-chain optionality," Landriault said in the statement.

JPMorgan's private Kinexys network handles more than $7 billion a day, a small part of the bank's $12 trillion a day payments business. Almost $50 billion in crypto assets are locked in Ethereum-based applications, according to DeFiLlama.

JPMorgan is among more than 30 banks helping Swift define its blockchain-based ledger, though it was not among the 17 banks Swift named in July for a live pilot. In the U.S., JPMorgan, Citi, Bank of America and Wells Fargo are among banks planning a shared network for tokenized deposits.
