Tesla Expands Unsupervised Robotaxi to Full Austin Metro
Tesla expanded its unsupervised Robotaxi geofence to cover the entire Austin Metropolitan area, its fifth such expansion. The move doubles prior coverage and demonstrates growing reliability of its Full Self-Driving system despite maintaining a conservative fleet size.

Tesla doubles its Robotaxi operational area in Austin. The company posted on X that unsupervised Robotaxi is now in the entire Austin Metro area. This marks the fifth expansion of the geofence and more than doubles its previous size.
Tesla has matched or exceeded competitors like Waymo in coverage area despite its smaller fleet.
Prior expansions occurred in July, early August, late August, and late October 2025. The geofence had remained unchanged since October 26 before this update.

Expanded coverage reaches suburbs and infrastructure. The new area includes suburbs like Pflugerville and Manor. It also covers I-35 highways, Gigafactory Texas, and the Austin-Bergstrom Airport.
Expansion follows media focus on fleet size. The update arrives days after outlets highlighted the small fleet size of Tesla's Robotaxi in Austin. Tesla has maintained a conservative fleet size across multiple geofence expansions to prioritize safety as its most crucial metric.
Move signals scaling of unsupervised autonomy. The expansion indicates Tesla's comfort level to broaden the ride-hailing service. It shows the Full Self-Driving system has reached sufficient reliability for broader real-world deployment.
Achieving full unsupervised operations across a major metro shifts the program from limited pilot testing toward a more mature commercial service while gathering miles for faster growth.

Running it costs real money. APIs, hosting, time. To keep improving the site and growing this into something useful for everyone, those costs have to be covered.
